The New EU Law on Crypto Is Now In: Introducing MiCA

1 May 2025

On 29 April 2025, New Balkans Law Office hosted its first dedicated webinar on the EU’s new crypto regulatory framework, titled The New EU Law on Crypto Is Now In: Introducing MiCA. The free online event brought together legal and regulatory experts to explore the legal landscape for crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) and the evolving Anti-Money Laundering (AML) obligations affecting the crypto sector.

The webinar focused on the regulatory frameworks governing CASPs in the EU and the UK, offering a comparative analysis of how MiCA and AML requirements impact crypto businesses operating across jurisdictions. Particular attention was given to the implications of MiCA for licensing, compliance, and operational structuring, as well as the alignment of EU and UK regulatory approaches.

The event provided attendees with a practical overview of:

  • Whether and how crypto businesses must be authorised under MiCA
  • Key compliance obligations and operational requirements for CASPs
  • Licensing strategies and risk mitigation considerations
  • Differences between the EU and UK regulatory models
  • Actionable guidance for aligning business operations with evolving regulatory obligations

The discussion featured four members of New Balkans Law Office’s regulatory and dispute resolution team:

Radostina Ivanova, Associate, who opened the session with an overview and comparison of the EU and UK approaches to crypto regulation.
Nevena Bekyarova, Partner, who presented an overview of the Bulgarian Bill on Markets in Crypto-Assets and its role in implementing MiCA at national level.
Maya Ivanova, Head of AML and Compliance, who examined enhanced compliance obligations for CASPs under MiCA and AML frameworks.
Kamen Shoylev, Managing Partner, who addressed emerging issues in crypto-related disputes and moderated the discussion.

Key segments of the agenda included expert-led panel discussions on MiCA and AML obligations, legal analysis of licensing and cross-border compliance issues, and a live interactive Q&A session, during which participants raised practical questions regarding regulatory authorisation, compliance strategy, and operational risks.

The webinar marked the first in NBLO’s MiCA-focused event series and reflected the firm’s commitment to supporting crypto businesses and investors navigating the rapidly evolving regulatory environment in the EU and the UK.
