Trade Representation Office (TRO) Residence Route in Bulgaria

21 August 2025

Private Clients, Citizenship and Immigration

Bulgaria continues to offer a strategic residency route for non-EU business owners and company representatives through the establishment of a Trade Representation Office (TRO). This route allows foreign companies to expand their presence in the EU while enabling their appointed representatives to obtain renewable residence permits in Bulgaria.

At New Balkans Law Office (NBLO), we support entrepreneurs, business owners, and digital nomads in navigating this route efficiently and compliantly.

Why Choose the TRO Route?

The TRO route is ideal for companies seeking to:

  • Explore the Bulgarian market
  • Conduct research and build local partnerships
  • Set the foundation for future business expansion into the EU

A TRO in Bulgaria provides a legally recognized structure to carry out non-commercial representational activities. While it does not engage in direct commercial trade, it serves as a gateway for businesses preparing for long-term strategic presence.

Company Eligibility Requirements

To establish a Trade Representation Office in Bulgaria, the foreign company must:

  • Be incorporated for a minimum of two years
  • Maintain active and tax-compliant status in its home jurisdiction
  • Have achieved an annual turnover of at least BGN 100,000 (approx. EUR 51,000 or equivalent in foreign currency) in each of the two financial years prior to registration, supported by official financial documents
  • Demonstrate genuine intent to explore or develop a business presence in Bulgaria

Documentation is submitted to the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) as part of the registration process.

Appointing Trade Representatives

The company may appoint up to two individuals as Trade Representatives eligible for residence under this route. These representatives will reside in Bulgaria to carry out non-commercial, representational functions, such as:

  • Liaising with local partners and stakeholders
  • Conducting research and feasibility studies
  • Promoting the company’s products or services in the region

NBLO will assist with the appointment process, ensuring all requirements are met for both the company and the designated individuals.

Residence Permits and Long-Term Opportunities

Trade Representatives are eligible for prolonged residence permits, initially valid for one year and renewable annually. After five years of legal residence in Bulgaria during which the individual must have physically resided in the country for more than 30 months Trade Representatives may apply for:

  • Permanent Residence, or
  • EU Long-Term Residence, allowing visa-free residence in other EU member states

Ultimately, these routes may lead to Bulgarian citizenship, provided all conditions are met.
