Starting in 2025, Bulgaria has introduced legislation that allows digital nomads to live and work in the country. Who Qualifies as a Digital Nomad in Bulgaria?

There are three recognised pathways to qualify for a digital nomad visa, depending on your employment or business situation.

All applicants must meet general requirements. This includes a valid passport, proof of accommodation in Bulgaria, comprehensive health insurance covering the period of stay, and a clean criminal background check.

Income Requirement for Digital Nomads

Applicants must also demonstrate a minimum annual income equivalent to fifty times the Bulgarian minimum monthly wage from the previous calendar year. This financial threshold ensures that all digital nomads can comfortably sustain themselves while living in Bulgaria and is a crucial step in obtaining a long-term residence permit.

Working for a Foreign Employer

Foreign nationals employed by a company outside the European Union, European Economic Area, or Switzerland, who provide remote services, can apply for a digital nomad residence permit. The employment contract must cover at least the duration of the residence permit being sought.

Applicants in this category must submit their labour contract detailing the parties, salary, position, and contract term. Additionally, proof that the employer is legally registered abroad is required, which can be verified through registration documents or official company websites.

Owning or Holding Shares in a Foreign Company

Individuals who are legal representatives, board members, owners, partners, or shareholders holding more than 25 per cent of a company registered outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland are eligible for the digital nomad visa. The company must provide remote services, and the applicant must not work for clients in Bulgaria.

Required documentation includes company registration details, ownership information, management structure, and at least one contract with a client confirming the provision of remote services. Proof of the company’s legal status, such as an official registry link or website, is also necessary.

Independent Freelancers

Independent freelancers who have personally provided remote services for at least one year prior to applying may also apply. Applicants must not work for clients in Bulgaria or engage in local freelance activities.

Freelancers must submit at least one contract and client reference verifying remote work over the past year, including the client’s identification details. All documents must comply with international legalisation standards, such as the Hague Apostille Convention or bilateral treaties, and must be translated into Bulgarian by a certified translator.
