Bulgaria Introduces Digital Nomad Visa with Broad Parliamentary Support
19 June 2025Bulgaria has taken a significant step towards attracting global remote talent with the adoption of a new legal framework introducing a Digital Nomad Visa. On second reading in Parliament, the proposal passed with over 73% support – a rare display of consensus across political lines.
The new visa category amends the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, creating a residence permit aimed at individuals who work remotely and wish to explore life in Bulgaria while contributing to its economy and innovation ecosystem.
The development follows over a year of advocacy by the Bulgarian Startup Association (BESCO), and New Balkans Law Office (NBLO) is proud to have contributed to the drafting of the startup visa regulatory framework alongside BESCO.
The visa is expected to:
- Promote economic growth and attract foreign investment
- Stimulate the technology and innovation sectors through knowledge transfer
- Support regional development and the tourism industry
- Enhance Bulgaria’s image as an innovation hub in Europe
The changes will enter into force following publication in the State Gazette, expected within 15 days.
NBLO will be sharing further insights on the implementation of the Bulgaria Digital Nomad Visa and its implications for international remote workers and digital entrepreneurs in the region.
