Bulgaria joined the European Union on 1 January 2007. Since, it has been possible for Bulgarian citizens to travel and live freely throughout the EU, and to take up employment in 16 of the 27 countries as if they are nationals of the host country. The remaining 11 member states impose some restrictions on employment (but not self-employment) which will be phased out over the next 6 years.

 

Acquiring Bulgarian citizenship on the basis of origin is a straightforward process based on having at least one (however distant) ancestor of Bulgarian origin.
